About this Project

The photographic plates included in Park Fugue are as much concerned with the formal language of photography as with the landscape of the park. The work follows and builds on the rich history of American and European urban landscape photography as practiced by such important figures as Eugène Atget, Josef Sudek, and Ray Metzker. The influences for Park Fugue are not limited to the history of photography, however, but draw from the mediums of drawing and painting including the works of the great American abstract expressionists.

The plates were photographed on Kodak Tri-X black & white film with a Leica M6 camera. The film was processed with Kodak chemicals, scanned, and edited in Adobe Photoshop CS4. The book was designed with Adobe Indesign CS4.

Sources of Influence

  • Eugène Atget at the National Gallery of Art
  • Josef Sudek at Ateliér Josefa Sudka
  • Ray K. Metzker at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
